How to switch from Adobe Photoshop to GIMP
GIMP opens PSD files directly, so most of the move is learning where tools live, not converting files.

Steps
- Keep your PSD files as they are — GIMP opens them with layers intact (adjustment layers are flattened).
- Install GIMP 3 from gimp.org and enable Windows → Single-Window Mode for a Photoshop-like layout.
- Export your Photoshop brushes as .abr files; GIMP imports them via the Brushes panel.
- Reassign shortcuts in Edit → Keyboard Shortcuts to the Photoshop keys you rely on.
- Save new work as .xcf and export final images with File → Export As.
Watch out for
- Smart objects and adjustment layers don't survive the import
- CMYK print work needs a plugin
